I think you misunderstood me anyway.
By "hold" I specifically refer to its psychological grip on the player.
Skinner-box holds work fine, even on people. Their main problem is that one day, the entranced HUMAN simply snaps out of it with a resounding "WTF AM I DOING THIS FOR?!".
What they SEEM to be doing is trying to HIDE their Skinner-box behind something. I can't immediately SEE the box. But somehow I know it's there.
If they've buried the box too deep, players wont get "held" by it.
