What I am saying is that E3 is not the best place to do it.

E3 should be used to promote your product by showcasing big developments and games, not by reducing its price.

Firstly, announcing a price cut would have undoubtedly been the biggest announcement at E3. It would have vastly overshadowed the rest of Sony's announcements.

In order to maximize hype and product reception, Sony focused on these core things. A price cut at E3 would have undermined their entire marketing strategy.

Secondly, a price cut announcement does not need to take place at a big expo like E3.

Sony could do it in the middle of the Kalahari to 7 people and it would be headline news within the hour. Therefore, making the announcement at E3 would be a waste, when they could use the free publicity to promote their games instead.
I still can't help but feel a price reduction announcement would have done them good, as I believe they're at the point where they need to hit the competition with one thing after another.

Imagine if Sony had finished off their address with a "oh and by the way, you can pick all of these up on a PS3 that will now only set you back $X." Personally, my interest in the PS3 would have skyrocketed. It wouldn't have taken a lot of time and would have been a very climatic finish to E3 for them.

Remember - they're trying to bait people who don't have PS3's yet. There's a very large portion of gamers who will not buy an expensive console for a single game or even a few games they may be interested in. Whilst Sony's game announcements are all very well and good, they quite frankly mean nothing to me as an Xbox owner as I won't even remotely consider getting a PS3 until they drop the price. Ultimately, their entire keynote was a waste as none of it had the power to convince me to get a PS3 A price reduction announcement, AKA that "big bang moment," just may have made me sit up and take note.
