Thread: Bank Card - ATM Pin (Invalid Pin)

Default Bank Card - ATM Pin (Invalid Pin)

I received my new FNB Credit Card yesterday. Collected it from the branch, they said it was activated, they let me put the card in their machine to set the pin etc.. 4 digits and such. Everything went rather smoothly.

When I got back to my computer I registered for internet banking:

As you can see here it requests the ATM pin, the same as I set in the bank upon collection.

The internet banking registration went through 100% and all was fine, however last night I used the card at a restaurant to which the machine said invalid pin. I went back to the FNB site to confirm my ATM pin was in fact the 4 digit one I entered and it was fine.

I suspect that I either entered the pin in incorrectly at the restaurant, or perhaps the chip on the new card could be faulty? I don't assume it takes a certain time to activate because when those machines check the pin it doesn't interact with the FNB servers.

Anyone else have a similar experience? Will try it again this afternoon and if it still says invalid pin I will go past the branch tomorrow to have the card set again and make sure it is working.

    Yeaaaaah, that's pretty weird.

On your online banking profile, go to cards and just manually change the pin on your card to something else and then back again, if you still have a problem? Otherwise go into your branch and chat a consultant up about it.

    But... yeah, really weird.

I had that issue with my Standard Bank Card with the chip on it, used it the first day i got it and it didnt work. Worked great on the internet just not for swiping found out later that the card needed a few days to work... Till then bank told me to swipe like an old card using the mag strip.

I'd say head to the bank and let them fix it..
I remember my card (ABSA) was a bit weird at first - didn't want to work with the chip and pin but went to bank and ended up getting new card.

Well the chip is blocked now. Tried it again twice at the spar.

Made a small steam online purchase on it to check afterwards and that is fine so I suspect something up with the card. I suspect if I had to go to a merchant that only supports swiping the card will also work fine, I really think it the chip.

Will go to FNB and feedback tomorrow!

    Thanks for the replies.

You might want to ask them to remove the invalid PIN charges on your account since it was their cockup. Most banks charge about R5 every time you put the wrong PIN in.
