No, personally I'd not go for a 5.1 and go for a decent Sennheiser set with the extra money. However, seeing as you probably want that extra sense of immersion in your gaming a 5.1 headset might not be too bad, but the overall sound quality of a more expensive stereo set will be better. Also, he has a budget of R500, I don't see how recommending Steelseries will help him. Last I checked the Siberia v2 was selling for R700, add another R200 if you want the USB soundcard with it for 5.1. Steelseries are incredibly overrated and overpriced with what they offer. The only thing I did really enjoy of them when I tested it out - after hearing the price - was the mic. Very comfortable design.
@OP: The Kave's surround sound works with USB IIRC

I luv my ROCCAT
SteelSeries was R300 less than my roccat when I got them, still a decent headset as it is. If you going to compare the Sennheiser to rest of the pack you are just being stupid. It's obviously in a class of its own.
SteelSeries is a lot more comfortable than the Roccat, period. No use paying about a grand and then it hurts the top of your head unless you got some circle head going there. I'd hardly say they are overrated.
You don't say.
