    Default Gaming discrimination

The gaming industry discriminates against me and my people!

Why do I say this? When I say 'my people' I mean in fact the people on the under side of planet earth, i.e. the residents of the southern hemisphere.

According to the world (well at least the top half) we don't really exist or even if we did, we don't matter. This makes me sad.

The reason i say the gaming industry discriminates against my people is basically that there isn't any support, servers etc for the bottom half of the planet.

If I want to play an online MMO I have to login to either a European or an American server. This sucks I would like a server let's say for AFRICA, South America and probably Australia / New Zealand, etc.

Contrary to popular belief we also do have access to technologies like internet access, running water and electricity.

In fact we aren't that different from the rest of you who live on the top of the planet. We play games (just like you), we have families (just like you), our politicians are corrupt (just like yours), our police are useless (just like yours) and we also have money (just like yours, maybe just not at the same exchange rate).

The other MAJOR issue I have is that you developers automatically assume that EVERY GAMER in the world has an always on internet connection... Therefore you only develop games that can be played in co-op or multi-player online. This is all good and fine to build community with your players, but you are forgetting one thing...

What happened to LAN (Local Area Connection) and the rest of the offline communities who support their favourite developers? We have been forgotten and left behind to fend for ourselves and fight for the table scraps of the gaming industry.

So now I would like to ask, why do you ignore us? Why can't we get a some awesome developers to actually come to our countries to exhibit their awesome products? This is not the only problem, more recently less and less games are being offered to our hemisphere.

If we were living in one country and were ruled by the Developer Empire and the Northern Nobility under the same flag and treated with the in-equality we are treated with today, wouldn't we have already started some sort of a rebel alliance against our oppressors? Wouldn't we have fought battles and died for what we believe in? Wouldn't we keep fighting until we are freed and treated as equals?

Equals who aren't judged and left out and forgotten because we live on the wrong side of the planet, but true equals who receive the same benefits and support that the rest of you take for granted. Equals who are granted early access to Beta regardless of where your address might be. Equals who get to play every game instead of being left out because we aren't part of the right demographic.

    Rant over and out.

You realize this is a south African website...? Why are you saying "you"? We all have the same problem... I'm just saying...

You should act proudly South African and simply demand equal servers for all. Tell them its in the Freedom Charter. And a housing allowance too because you are entitled to it.

People, despite what everyone keeps telling you are not equal and neither are countries. If it is not profitable to set up servers here then profit-oriented companies simply don't set up servers here. And yeah, they do discriminate...against unprofitable regions & projects.

Gaming isn't the struggle (sorry), but you should definitely apply to the ANCYL and/or COSATU for a job....the entitlement attitude is totally in fashion there right now.

Aren't majority of gamers Americans and Europeans?

Well if i'm correct, somehow i doubt this will change anytime soon, so.... suck it up

Oh, just some interesting facts. South Africa's poverty rate is around 70% and America's is around 14%. Frankly i think that access to local MMO servers is somewhat a low priority for most.

The problem is there just aren't enough people with that kind access to be sustainable in Africa. I would hardly want to play on a server with only 800 guys logged on per night.

Maybe I'm too pessimistic about the amount, but it would pale in comparison to the numbers that you find in Europe.

Heroes of Newerth has local servers. Took a lot of effort from various people including S2 themselves to get them up and running. Only ISP that was capable of hosting servers at the time was IBurst and they took on most of the cost. That basically bought time and when that fell flat due to an disagreement, IS was able to provide a financially viable option, something that simply wasn't possible a few months earlier.

There's been a lot of change in the South African internet infrastructure, the only problem that still persists is that the online gaming population in SA is way too small and saturated atm.

I wrote this and posted it on Google + and I have a lot of developers connected to my account. I wanted to provoke some kind of response, but nothing yet. Since they are mostly in America and are going to work round about now.

I also posted it on MyGaming to gauge your response to our common dilemma. I know money is always the issue, but if developers actually supported the southern hemisphere wouldn't we all be less likely to pirate games we can't normally get or don't have any support for? Wouldn't we support them for actually providing a service that adds value to our gaming experience?
