I have to agree, I think F2P is the way to go, both from a gamer point of view and a developer/publisher point of view. I have put more hours and had more fun with a F2P game than I have had with a bought one and I have managed to keep my spend down to like R100 (6 extra areas - about 25 new quests) using grind points.
Sure, some titles it will be difficult to implement in but that's a challenge for them to overcome if they want to see their product last and last while still earning them revenue.

One very good thing, as you mentioned, is that for an F2P to succeed - it REALLY has to shine.
A game can be free all it wants, if I'm not enjoying it, I'm sure as hell not going to dump ANY money or additional time into it.
It could bring about a massive revolution in the quality of games in the market, if it becomes mainstream.
Game companies would actually HAVE TO compete for our time/money/attention by the QUALITY of the game, and not the hype.
