You're probably thinking of the second encounter, that one I think came out around then I think.
WEll in serious sam II, wich I didn't like as much as the first, in the swamp stage, if you jump along some little islands ot get to one of those megahealth things you will reach a tree, with Duke Nukem Hanging from it

Yeah i enjoyed serious sam. Sure there was no story but it did exactly what it was supposed to. Bring endless action (especially in coop).
Serious Sam second encounter and Serious Sam 2 were totally crap tho...
not really ! serous sam came out around 2000 and halo came out in 2001
