How does one check one's rep points? I'll probably try not to irk people with my grammar nazi ways from now on. Apologies to to0kenZA

P.S. The last iPad comp; I only realised i had to post in the comp thread with a couple of hours to spare. The rules in the first post were really not clear... /ducks and hides

Hobo - I can't be 100% certain ... but I believe the amount of rep a person gives or takes is related to the amount of rep they have on the forum already. So for instance, if someone like myself or Murph + or - reps you, you'll lose or receive a greater amount of rep than, say, if someone with the default amount (I think it's 10 points) adds or takes rep. So I'm guessing someone with a fair amount of rep struck at you there.

If you see a gray bubble - instead of red or green - that's probably a case of someone with negative or very little rep using the button.

This explanation crossed my mind. Its a system that makes sense. Just like in the real world, if someone popular says someone else is cool, it has a lot more pull than if someone who is invisible to everyone else says someone is cool :P

Other than comp threads, have you ever seen a locked thread? I honestly don't recall any.

It's very much a case of social proof, if you will The same kind of thing really applies to Facebook and Twitter - and I see it every day because of my work. If I tweet a URL, with my 140-odd followers ... it gets noticed by most of them. Some of them - maybe one or two, will retweet, spreading it further. If a person with 5 or 6 followers do it ... it usually goes nowhere. On the other end of the spectrum is the guy with 5,000 followers ... his tweets obviously spread faster.

So like you said ... popularity counts.

There was a thread locked on Tuesday - someone tried to kick up a fuss about the iPad competition. In all fairness, I think the OP overstated things a little.
Btw - it wasn't me who +repped you there - I tend to be very sparing with the rep button for the most part
