Bit of an update. I started a thread on a legitimate gold making forum community to see if the wow players in there could be the 1% of the population who own the majority of the wealth (same as the current OccupyWallStreet protests etc).

I then started a poll in a different thread to try and get a rough estimate of how much gold is circulating within the forums.

After only a few hours we have 55 votes and a total of 76,950,000 gold. (that's 76.95 million gold).
The forum itself has 3,063 members, of which 690 are considered active by the forum system. So only about 8% of the active members have voted so far and that's already 76 million gold.

    Crazy right?

Would it be possible to farm gold with a free account only?

No, because free trial accounts do not have access to the Auction House or the ability to trade / mail items and gold with other players. You would be limited to killing mobs, and selling what ever you got to a vendor, an extremely inefficient method due to the design of the economy. Blizzard doesn't want vendoring items to be even a remote possibility, and would rather have item drops interacting within the economy.

Also, the max amount of gold you can gather with a free account is 10G.

World of Warcraft has a fascinating economy, that can be manipulated and played with for endless hours at a time.

I have not however, bumped into any other South Africans who have a similar such passion (although there is a very large such global interest).

I'm am 30, 000 gold away from being gold capped (which is 1 million gold minus 1 copper currently).
I always save to about 30k gold then spend some of it then save to that again

FYI - If you buy a WoW Annual Pass, which you can pay monthly, you get Diablo 3 free. And some other tit-bits.
