I have a friend who is a girl, she calls me a man whore when I comment on a hot girl - should I get upset at her for being so insensitive? I don't think so because to do so would be damn ridiculous. Likewise a gaming site should not come across as being so third reichy.

P.S - I didn't see the comments and I despise anything really shitty towards other people and if there was hardcore stuff, take action, but if the above commenters comment which led to a ban is the extent of it, then lighten the hell up, seriously.
Tarryn asked me personally to remove it because she was offended. She takes a load of abuse from these trolls all the time, specifically targeting the fact that she is female.

I don't think this should be tolerated in the name of "lightening up."

By way of experiment, approach a male stranger and call them a 'man whore' - I'm sure the reaction will be quite different to a jibe shared among friends.

Well I'm sorry Tarryn. In all honesty my post was not meant to offend you. More a play along retarded internet jokes/memes'. I like most of your articles, really do enjoy the style, but making fun of other things like you do is bound to get some negative feedback and I'm willing to bet a lot of its not just because your a female. Write under a John Smith name or something the way you do and it will still get some attention. Maybe just not as much, keep writing under it and the hate will grow.

Internet really needs a sarcasm fond. would make things so much simpler

No I actually mean people go out of their way to be offended.
That's just the way it seems to me. It's ridiculous.
Lots of things offend me. Do you see me throwing a tantrum because of it?
No... I quietly move on. Who cares? :/

In this case, it was some persons code for a game. What he names some variables,
functions, classes whatevers, it's his business.
Guy1: Hey... I need you to make a change to that thing where you do extra damage against mal...
Guy2: Feminist Whore? Cool... what changes?

Shit... I'd do it to, if it reminds me exactly of what it does. If that's the way the guy codes, well.. whatever.
    function female_char_ability_13{}
    yeah right...
    function feminist_whore{}
Shit yeah, let's get this thing going. x_x

I agree with disabling the comments section though. People have given Tarryn a bit of a tough time (all
in good fun though...) in the comments section on some past articles.

But come on now.... time to move on. It's ok to poke fun now and then but now it's getting a little stupid.

A simple smiley emoticon would probably do the trick. :O Maybe emoticons should be added to the comments section? :P

The comments I didn't see or the comment in question ("fan girl made a funny. Hope she at-least wrote the article from the kitchen") was asked to be removed? I used to write mocking stuff years and years ago as Tarryn does and once you do that publicly you open yourself to all types of abuse. A flippant kitchen comment is helluva far from being anything to get into a knot about. If you can't take lame comments like that, getting out the public eye would probably be a good idea.

I agree with Hraffnir's post, very well put.

It's not the fact that people leave such comments, it's the fact that they're too fucking weak to even leave their names, and that they go out of their way to give Tarryn a hard time, no matter what. They're a bunch of scared twats who are too pussy to come out from behind their veil of anonymity and post derogatory comments to a female writer because they don't have anything else going for them in their lives. It's probably those snotnosed pricks sitting alone with one or two friends every break, thinking they're the baws while actually nobody really likes them.

At risk of repeating myself ad nauseam: It's not the single remark, it's the culmination of stupid regurgitated memes, unoriginal provocative trolling, and verbal abuse that is becoming rather tiresome and covers the front page of the website with ignorant bile.

For a reason which I cannot fathom, many gamers seem to fall in line with this obtuse behaviour as if it is an acceptable norm. I believe they misrepresent the general disposition of people who frequent MyGaming and proudly call gaming their favourite pastime.

You are welcome to your opinion; and Tarryn is welcome to decide for herself what she finds offensive and tiresome.

When one of MyGaming's senior writers is unhappy with offensive and stupid comments left by blatant trolls, who do you think I'm going to back up?

It's illogical to suggest that just because a gaming journalist is 'in the public eye' that they must continually tolerate pointless verbal abuse.

To unpack the use of the word 'offensive' here, and at risk of speaking on Tarryn's behalf; it's not as if she was on the verge of an emotional breakdown after reading that comment.

It's offensive in the sense that writers work hard every day to produce entertaining reading material for the website users and hopefully prompt some sort of intelligent discussion about the content. Instead, a small vocal portion of the user-base is constantly using the comments beneath to target the writer with unoriginal, and insulting memes that were only slightly amusing the first time they were dredged from the collective conscious of 4chan over 5 years ago.

It undermines their work, doesn't feel particularly rewarding, and instantly derails any intelligent conversation that might have been had into a stupid meme-regurgitation contest.

To draw an analogy: I don't know what you do for a living, but I assume you take some sort of pride in your work. Imagine having an annoying idiot constantly deriding you merely for doing your job. They take every opportunity that presents itself to hurl at you some sort of overused internet meme that dismissively makes light of the work you do - day in, day out. Meanwhile you have a constant stream of people looking in on your work who may also decide it would be funny to chime in with their own jokes.

At first, you may choose to make light of it using your own form of humour, but inevitably, that just encourages the cycle to repeat itself. This might seem amusing to a passing observer, but after dealing with it for a number of months, you will likely lose your sense of humour about it, and rather feel as if you'd like something done to make it stop.

Having said all that, we have left the comments easy to use and anonymous for some time, and unfortunately it's obvious that there will be those that abuse it.

MyGaming frequently lets many stupid arguments and insult-fights among users slide - the exception has always been hate speech, examples of that being misogyny, racism and bad-mouthing religions.

Anyway, we will have a login to comment system in place sooner rather than later, and then it will become much more tiresome for the trolls.

TL;DR - We don't take kindly to trolls on MyGaming.

F$*@# yeah. That's what I've been asking for, for months now.

Honestly, if she really feels that way, then by all means, disable the comments section. Temporary solution till the login system is set for comments.

The up/down vote system could be modified so that if it has been downvoted enough times, you'll have to click to display the message. Or even a "flag" system for shitty misogynist/racist/outright insulting comments.

Other than that, laugh (for whatever reason) and move on is what I say. x_x

lol... Even that gets abused. With no login system it's simply a matter of clearing cookies/changing IP and extra thumbs-up or thumbs-down can be added.

I get the feeling it's the same two or three people doing it over and over again. They seem to get a kick out if it. You'll likely notice the "Graal" in the comments isn't the Graal on the forums--he's been known to impersonate a number of us, which is why many of us no longer use our forum aliases in the comments section.

Kudos to James for his post.
