If the higher refresh rate of the screen is divisible by the source frame rate then it shouldn't degrade imo. The screen will simple show the same picture multiple times in a row. So a 120hz screen on a 60hz source should be fine. If the rate isn't divisible then its mismatched and then you'll need v-sync.
