I must say, Games has become very dumbed down... the majority are just copies of each other, which is why I am very selective about what I play.
I don't just buy and play anything and everything.

One thing that is especially irritating is virtually every movie has a game these days, sometimes even before the movie is out... and then they are average / mediocre / poor

There are a few games that are released that makes some nice impressions and breaks ground in certain areas (Doom3, P0rtal, wii... lol), but nothing that will captivate you for some time to come... it is more about elusions of grandeur (looks), big explosions, killing stuff, and quick action these days... I. want. stuff. now.
Pretty much the way society is today, so I guess it's no surprise games has gone the way it has. Everyone wants to make a buck and have their piece of the pie.

Ah, The days of Larry, Monkey Island, Wing Commander (damn Kilrathi), Police / Space Quest, HOMM (when it was still good), Baldur's Gate... The shooters Duke, Doom and many more *reminisces*

And I must admit, I think I prefer them there - way back in the archives of my mind's memories. Some of these classics will just not work today and may end up being nothing more than a tarnished memory.

BTW - Spotted an error in the article
"Come one, guys, no one buys the whole “let’s bring the oldies back so our kids can enjoy them like we did” malarkey."
What the mind can conceive, it can achieve.

Awesome article. I'm not the oldest user on the forum but I have a good respect for old games and I've played a lot of them. I played Leisure Suite Larry (and this wasn't a good idea) on an emulator when I was about 9; it was the most fun I'd ever had.

The first game I took seriously was Final Fantasy 7 and 8, and that's what kicked off my gaming. I've clocked FF1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 countless times. 5, 6 and 8 are amazing, 7 and 9 are great and Final Fantasy 10 is a bit too modern to live up to the tittle.

When I heard they were remaking one of the old Final Fantasy games for DS I was almost excited, but then I read the fine print: "...slight changes to story"

Revising a game is sort of like going back and rewriting a book and "touching it up to be better". When someone makes a great movie I like to think that the movie turned out well because the produced/writer made what they wanted to make.

With follow ups or re-releases they seem to go with what the crowd wants. Final Fantasy X-2 was a great example; people were upset at the "death" of Tidus and wanted a happy ending. For game writers with as much story skill as the Japs from Square, a Dress-Sphere is a little bit ridiculous. Who changes in the middle of a fight, seriously?

Old games are fine just as they are. I got Zork working a few weeks ago and it was amazingly fun. I can't imagine anyone modernizing it, it would just be upsetting. The classics are still in tact, and anyone who wants to play them can find them and set up an emulator and enjoy the game as it was meant to be enjoyed.
Couscous; the food so nice they named it twice
