The Wii U is new, it’s different, it’s ambitious, but is it “next generation”? If you ask Michael Pachter, the answer is “not quite”.

“The Wii U is a pretty ambitious undertaking. It’s a new console, with new controls and architecture, but it’s not quite “next” generation.” Pacther said in a exclusive interview with Industry Gamers, “Developers have to contend with differences between the Wii U and current generation consoles, then have to figure out what to do with the controls.”

Nintendo consoles are usually best remembered for their unique mix of stellar first party titles and must own third party exclusives, this was far from the case with the Wii, which offered only a handful of worthwhile third party games to hardcore gamers. Pacther stressed the importance of Nintendo launching the console with compelling third party games.

“The timing is still up in the air, and as far as I know, there are no significant third party “exclusives”; instead, we’ll see iterations of third party games already on the market, which is unlikely to drive significant hardware sales. In order for the launch to be “hugely successful” (as your question phrased it), the console will need three things: a competitive price, compelling first party launch titles, and compelling third party launch titles. We don’t know if the Wii U will have any of these, so it’s quite difficult to predict a hugely successful launch.”

What do you think? Do you agree with Pacther’s assesment of third party exclusives — are they really that important, or are they a thing of the past — do you think the Wii U is “next gen”? Let us know!
