    What. Like this solar furnace in France?



    The solar furnace at Odeillo in the French Pyrenees-Orientales can reach temperatures up to 3,800 degrees Celsius.

    depends, you probably spend way more energy replicating the sun's energy than can be produced from solar panels :P

    wow, the fact that you could melt rock with that focused sunlight beam is just amazing! why can't they use this to boil water to power steam turbines to generate electricity ? for free !! :-)

    Yeah fully. Also why can't we have mini (much less efficient obviously) ones to heat our household water? So it just heats on the hot water pipe or something only as it comes out?

    It would melt the pipe...

    Dude, I said a mini one thats much less efficient...meaning, tone it down to a usable temperature.

    The average pocket magnifying glass can generate temperatures as high as 300 degrees celcius at it's focal point... even at that small scale, the water would come out as steam!
