On the one hand bigger map could take more players, on the other hand getting left behind at base would require to run a marathon over half the map.

So I take it none of you ever played Joint Ops (128 player maps)?
The only reason why more than 64 players is a bad idea is because of the linear map design from that Battlefield abortion Bad Company 2. True Battlefield maps had huge open areas, so you cannot get easily pinned down and be spawn raped. The distances also made it perfect for maneuvering, flanking the enemy, or even circling around and catch them in the classic pincer movement.
Of course when more than half of your team is sitting at the airfield holding hands, it doesn't help.
The problem is that people seem to treat Battlefield like an infantry shooter with the vehicles as an afterthought. Battlefield was, at least until BF2's Infantry only mod, a vehicle driven game, with the infantry action as a secondary option.
I agree that map size helps, but as someone mentioned, if you happen to spawn at a base and a noob goes of with the last vehicle, knowing you would like a ride, it just isn't worth spending half of the match running across the map.... only to be run over by a team mate in a tank or buggy just as you near the enemy base. So the trick is to get the balance between player/map size right.
I still sometimes think that 32 players is the optimal model.
It's just so much fun being able to pick on one person exclusively for a few minutes non-stop.
Increasing the model to 64 players makes that already much harder to do. Still possible, but likely very tough to achieve.
If they were to amp it to 128 (for example), it would just becomes a nameless, faceless, pointless fragfest.
In that kinda situation, you might as well just go back to playing Duck Hunt...
Thinking of jets I'm wondering how many folks started cleaning the joysticks while downloading origin...?
