Would you invest in game development?

Very Interesting Article. I would defiantly invest in it. If i had a coupe of grand lying around now i would buy shares in a studio. The fears about piracy mentioned are a very real threat to this idea. If anybody can do it, it would be valve. This type of arrangement could also save future titles from suffering the same fate as DNF. If each player who wants the game completed gave the R400 or whatever it would be done quick quick. The other fear i would have is that if you invest and the game goes bust or whatever you would loose your money. This could lead to players only being willing to fork out for sure thing titles like MW2 or Bioshock 2.
Actually, this would be the reason I wouldn't invest in a game like that. What if the game never gets released, or they keep asking for more money?
What happens if you pay R400 into the DNF, and then 6 months later a buggy incomplete game is released to you? Personally, I prefer to see what the game is about, and the requirements (and even ratings) before I invest my money.
Wait... what?
Yeah, but when? Episode 3 is taking next to as long as HL2 took.
Also, looking at left 4 dead and the community response to L4D2. Lets not start the argument over l4d "content", but most people who would have invested before hand in L4D would feel a little betrayed if Valve came back to them going "well, how about money for L4D2 and stop adding to L4D1?"
(on a side note, I'm perfectly happy with my L4D, i never bought the game expecting TF2 type bi-monthly additions - but there are other who are upset about it)
Wait... what?
I see your point.
Remember a year or 2 ago Episodic games where all the rage. But most flopped, I mean Sin Episodes never got past episode 1. I think people what where expecting L4D content on a bi-monthly basis where setting them selfs up for a disapointment. If you expect a developer to roll out new contents like clock work the quality is bound to suffer and then you will a bunch of people complaining about the lack of good quality content. Look at Fallout 3, the DLC packs haven't made the kind of impact you would expect simply coz they dont add enough.
Yeah Episode 3 is taking too long but knowing Valve they are unwilling to release anything less than another spectacular installment. I also think they are developing HL3 on the side but thats a whole differnt story.
Even though Ep3 is taking forever we know it will come out and when it does your investment will bear ripe juicy fruits.
it seems to me Valve is trying to get the customers to buy the game before it comes out , It's not a bad idea, But not a very effective one with regards to how popular they need to be..
