Unhappy PS3 Red light of Death PLEASE HELP!

    Hi all

    My PS3 just stopped working.
I was watching some movies using the PS3, not games so was not even running hot. It then suddenly shut down and the red light started flashing. Now when I turn it on, it beeps and the green light starts flashing red.

Its an old 60gb Model which I dont wanna lose as I have lots of PS2 games and this one is still backwards compatible. Also its about 5 years old, so no warrenty.....

Any ideas? Did some reading and it seems I can use it now as a doorwstop.....

A quick google search got me these sites that can repair your console, partserve will only do a swop out at a very high price.

    http://planetgaming.co.za/
    http://www.play-it.co.za/
    http://consoleservicecentre.co.za/

I have no idea what any of the above mentioned sites offer or what their service is like, I believe its worth getting into contact with them.

Yeah your best bet would be to go to partserve and see if they can't fix it.
Word of warning: it's likely a compete motherboard replacement, and IF they have stock on those still, it's gonna be super expensive!

More than likely though, they won't have parts anymore for such old models...
    Worth a try though!

Thanks guys, im gonna give them a call today.
I will let you know what they say. But if it gonna cost me R1000+ to repair, I guess I will buy a new one then I need to buy a PS2 as well.... jeez this sucks!
But how do I get my Saved Games off? As far as I know as soon as I remove the hard drive and install it into the new PS3 it is going to want to format it.

At least the console gave me a good run... 5 years aint half bad, remember I still payed R5500 for the console. and it was being used just about every day. So I cant really complain...

If you have not backed up your stuff before the console shut down completely, I am afraid you are screwed in terms of data transfer. If you hand in the console to be swopped out you will not get the HDD back. You may be lucky if they repair it but I would not bet on it.

I run backups once a month on my machine, and do it overnight. I also learned that lesson the hard way.

I remember some time ago to have an out-of-warranty console swopped cost over R2k. So on that maybe save yourself the hassle and just go out and buy a new one if you can.

But 5yrs is not bad at all!!!!

    Good luck!!

Typical of me... I always preach to everyone to ensure they make backups... and guess what I dont!
The last time I made backups was when I upgraded the HDD in the my PS3, which was about 8 months ago. So there goes that 8 months worth of saved games.
Luckily some of the newer games is using the Cloud Backup, so those I will be able to get. Thank you PSN+

Sorry to hear that your PS3 has passed on but it did have a good run though. My advice would be to get a slim if the repairs cost to much.

    Unlucky bud.
This happened to my 60GB about 2 years ago already - so you had a good run.

When I tried to get the console replaced through partserve, it worked out too expensive and made more sense to get a new console.

Just spoke to an oke from PartServer. They can do a like for like swop at R1299 ex vat but for a Manufacture Refurbished unit.
Hmmm now that is half the cost of a new unit, but its still second hand.

Will have to check the budget now.
    Thanks for the help

Thats quite a reduction in the swop price the last time i took one in it was R2200, but i paid it cause i wanted my 60GB back... Lol. Now its just stand there cause i bought a slim one cause i couldnt wait for the repair.
