summed up imho:
1) We expected too much of something that was clearly build on that time's mind set.
2) It took fucking long to get finished due to some really unnecessarily bullshit and was really over hyped.
3) When gearbox took over (yes took over not start over) everyone expected AAA when they just finished what was started.
4) End result: game was kak.
How do you rate something like that without being really critical about it?

After acquiring the rights to develop a Duke Nukem title, Gearbox should've promptly announced that they were cancelling Duke Nukem Forever (citing disjointed development and the like) and announced that they were developing a completely new Duke Nukem title from scratch. And then they should've actually done it. Then I think we would've had a Duke Nukem title of quality.
It's like an author writing a novel, but only giving finishing half of it, and then for the next 10 years spreading it around other authors to try and finish it.
That said, I believe I read that Gearbox are going to be working a new Duke Nukem title. I think it's safe to say that it will be better than DNF, but I also question whether Duke really has a place in this world anymore. Perhaps we should leave some titles back in the 90's where they belong.
Analog Clock, Digital Age.
That is all.
