    Default Steam help

Ok so some of you guys knowI finally got my steam acc .

I went and got a backup of Kiruna's steam folder but when I try to run it on my pc it keeps on asking for a product key. Note the backup folder only contains her free games.

I have no idea how to add the games to my folders - I really dont have the cap to dl them hence why I got the games from her.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Did she gave you the whole steam installation as it is or just the steamapps ?

    Afaik

    x) you should install steam and let it load up with your login
    x) then close it completely
    x) copy over the steamapps from her folder into the folder where you installed steam

or is this an actual back via steam's backup and restore ?

Why do people insist on copying Steam folders where you often encounter issues or find you forgot to copy something when Steam has a GREAT backup utility that is super easy to use.

Because it takes longer using the backup. Hell it took a very long time for me to just copy over my 600 GB of steam games to another hard drive.

Wyvern did you have those games in your steam list already?

Ive got the games (most of them in my folder). I couldnt remember all the names of the free games we copied. But we didnt copy her folder, she made a backup of just those games.

Monk - WE USED THE BACKUP UTILITY.

I'm bit confused here as only a game that's not been installed will ask for a key, or it's one of her games that's installed via a disc.

If you already have the game in your library then you could try to start and stop it's download in your games library, then right click on it, view cd key, write it down, delete it's local content and then finally when it asks for the key then just enter it.

...or is it a game you don't have that's asking for the key ? I'm quite sure you could select which games you want to restore when you use the utility, then just restore all the titles you have except that game.

Ok thanks Prophet I will give that a try, as far as I know the ones we chose where the ones available at the moment on the steam Free to play. Its not letting me select any specific games at this point, it just immediately asks for a product key. Will report back once I have tried that.

Does it say for which title it is asking a key? Maybe you should obtain a key for the website for the f2p game that's wanting one ?

Only other option I can think of is to log in with kiruna's account ( you'd obviously need her to give you the key pass as well ), try the restore, hopefully it works.

Then log in again with your account. Otherwise I really don't know what's wrong there.

    :edit
Else go visit again and have her backup each title separately that you want so that you can restore them separately and find the offender if it occurs again. Other thing I would try is more involving where you copy from her <steam>\steam apps\< matching ncf > and <steam>\steam apps\common\< matching game> to your steam installation ex

    from her installation

    <steam>\steam apps\Bambie.ncf
    <steam>\steam apps\common\Bambie

    to your installation

ncf goes here in <steam>\steam apps\
game folder goes in <steam>\steam apps\common\

Not the preferred method as monk said, but it does work as well, but can sometimes "upset" steam.

Thanks Prophet, that is whats been bugging me as well is that it doesnt tell me which product key it wants.

Otherwise I will make a plan to go visit her again and try just copying the folders directly rather than making a backup.
