Thread: Sharing a Steam account?

It would obviously be against the terms and conditions of Steam. But if you really wanted to do this it could up to be quite an administrative headache. AFAIK Steam now sends out email confirmations (similar to how online banking works with one time passwords) if they detect that you are connecting from a new PC or new IP. You guys would have to agree on a shared email account as well, or have one guy play the master role. Which could possibly leave the slave stranded for a few hours or a day.

Steam can also be very temperamental when it comes to offline mode. I have never really found offline mode to be reliable enough to be 100% sure that I would be able to game without an Internet connection.

    He's actually right Graal.....

lets say for instance, you were not signed into steam and you lost your net connection, you obviously wouldn't be able to sign in without an internet connection, in order to go into 'offline mode' you MUST have authenticated to the steam servers ie signed in, once signed in though, you can stay in offline mode for as long as you please, if you restart your pc you can still stay in offline mode, since your authenticated info is saved...

    Quite correct what he's said

I dunno, what I took from his post is that you have to sign in to Steam with a connection, and then go into offline mode, and if you then close Steam you'll need a connection again.

That's not the case. As long as your account credentials are stored on your PC, you can pretty much go into offline mode any time your connection is down. It'll just pop up a notification stating that it could not connect to Steam, and ask if you would like to try again or launch in offline mode. I've been doing it the last two weeks, and I don't have a connection on my PC.

    Yip quite correct.

Anyway sharing a Steam account is illegal as it stands. I wouldn't do this.

Well that is how my Steam has worked for the last few years. Regardless of what I do, if my net is down and Steam hasn't been opened yet it will not go into offline mode. Same thing happens with my bro's machine.

    So yeah dunno.

To solve that problem, just let steam start up when windows starts up, if you're not connected to the net, it will give you the option to log on in off line mode.

As I said that doesn't work for me. It starts up says there is no connection asks if I want to go offline I hit go offline then it tells me it can't go into offline mode and closes. Same with bros machine and YES we both have out set to save credentials locally.

It's the same for me, once I've been able to get steam into offline mode, it works fine no matter how many times I restart it, but if Steam was closed or I restart while steam was online and my connection goes down, I can just forget about getting back into it again at all. If I click on the 'start in offline mode' button it gives an error that says it can't connect to the server, or something like that. Luckily I don't have too many issues, otherwise I would just leave it in offline mode permanently.

On topic, I would never share my Steam login details with anybody. I don't trust anyone with something like that.

Back up all you're games, then remove steam from you're pc. Install steam again, Restore you're games and then try it, if after that it still won't let you use it in offline mode, report it to steam and let them help you trouble shoot. I do take my hat off to the guys behind steam, I've had a couple of issues lately with mw3 (im just to good for those snot nose kids so they keep reporting me for hacking) had to deal with that. +1 to them for sorting it out quickly.
