Heh. I usually can't stand it when people get precious about genres (and metalheads are particularly egregious offenders in this category), but I really have to disagree with you here. I've been a metalhead for over 17 years now - I listen to all kinds of metal, from old school and black metal to grind, doom, melodic death, folk, thrash, and almost everything in between.
And really, Motley Crue and Iron Maiden sound totally different. Where Motley Crue, for example, was very glam-inspired, Iron Maiden (as well as most of the NWOBHM bands) had their roots very much in harder punk rock. In fact, the first two Maiden albums are decidedly punkish in character.
Maybe it's something only a metalhead can appreciate, though, I don't know. But to me, it's just incredible that anyone would think they sound similar. But then, I suppose I think all dance music sounds the same. Rave, techno, hard house, or whatever. It all sounds like shit. :P
