The Drama never stops - It seems as if we have a possible IP address to work with , and we have been given a suggestion by those in the know to open up a criminal case .
Lets hope it pans out.
I just wonder if these guys who do this sort of thing ever stop to consider how their actions affects a business - especially a small one - and of the people whose jobs that they are putting at risk.

It's what hackers do. They try to make a name for themselves, by becoming known and then business comes to them. They do not care particularly about their victims. Some just do it for kicks, cause they can. These are the scary guys.
Most hackers these days though, are nothing but script-kiddies that cant hack themselves out of a paperbag.
They can copy-paste like a bat out of hell though - using someone else's code to exploit specific and well-known attack vectors.

They either try to disrupt / destroy (and claiming a victim) or they try to steal something, which may be valuable or have monetary value associated to it. Some even create botnets using millions of Internet-connected computers. These work over time and become active whenever the master deemes it fit to make his bots get to work. The effect can be devastating.

At the same time, all these are causing their victims loss of revenue, loads of frustration, etc.

Ive heard this theory before - but honestly how much cred can you get for hacking a retail site - LoL surely its like a gamer claiming cred for finishing Barbie Island Princess on easy.

See my reference to 1/ script-kiddie, i.e. not a serious hacker and 2/ because they can.
It may even be someone you know, a client that did not like the way he was handled, an ex-lover, ex-employee that knew the system (i.e. inside job), etc. etc. The possibilities are endless.

People are crazy. Even more so on the Internet.

I would be more worried about how it happened, since your provider should not have allowed this to happen, unless you are being allowed to host in an unsecure manner. (This alone is very dangerous - it is like leaving your door open at night when you are sleeping. It is something you simply do not do, especially if your life / livelihood is at stake.)

So, hopefully you have found out how it happened and the open-door has now been closed.
Not sure if you know, but I wonder if it happened to any other sites that are being hosted on the same server, since that is most often the case - it is not just one site that gets defaced / hacked.
