    Default Windows 7 permissions issue

w00t, my first real problem with Windows 7. It wouldn't be Windows without one

Anyway, I am the sole administrator on my PC. I activate a guest account sometimes when someone else wants to make use of my PC.

All my music, videos, documents etc. are stored in the My Music, My Videos, My Documents etc. sections in my account folder. However, all of a sudden a few weeks ago when I tried to move some photos around my PC told me that I don't have the necessary permission to do that and as a result denied my access. I managed to play around a little and grant myself access to some, but now it's gone and messed up ALL my music folders. I can't manually fix them all.

I'm so confused as I didn't change anything, I am the only admin on the PC and it shows that my account has full control of all the folders in question.

    Any ideas? So frustrating...

rightclick on your main music folder, go to properties, go to security, at the bottom go to permissions, then go to owner, and add the bottom click on "replace owner......"

I think it is an end-user problem and not a Windows problem

Basically, do what Mappy said above.

Those folders you are mentioning have always been treated a bit differently on a sharing and permission level ever since XP was released. Especially if you were using different profiles and such, you could mark these folders (i.e. your profile) as private and then no other user could access it, other than your account. They called it Simple sharing or some such. I never liked it and switched my system to the old classic file-sharing structure.

These folders and their special permissions would cause havoc with copying stuff out of those folders to normal folders on the file system. It would sometimes just create shortcuts to the actual data in the profile folders (which is what these are you are referring to) or even retain the same permissions, meaning only certain accounts could access it.

    Anyway, good luck.
What the mind can conceive, it can achieve.

Hence, this is why I don't put music, pictures in generic folders installed with windows
Much easier to maintain that ways anyway

    Change ownership like Maplassie suggested

I have changed myself to the owner, however, it wants me to do that with every single folder manually now and eish...all my music folders. I've tried applying the same properties to subfolders and files etc. but it doesn't change anything.

    RC1

I think I may have fixed it. Looks like it's an issue with Sharing. When I share my folders it doesn't want to grant me access xD Will update once I've discovered if it is indeed fixed or not.
