The private servers for WoW are okay, they're not terrible! Obviously you can't experience the game in its full, but it's definitely useful in pulling people in to the proper game by giving them a feel for it.
my little brother still plays on a private server. on the weekend he hit lvl 47, looted a staff of jordan and got 3 more blues. he saved and logged off to go to a birthday party, when he came back, the server had crashed, he lost his level due to a data roll-back (was back at 46) lost all his items and gold that he farmed and that was that... he hasnt played wow since! (especially because i tell him im playing retail and life is dandy on retail XD)
on most private servers there should be a .save function - so each time u either pick up and epic - or you get nice items in a raid - spam your .save macro - that normally tends to keep items for small server crashes - for major rollbacks you would be out of luck yeah
