Bah need to wait till I move into my new town house before I can play this
Pff... you no listens to me
Anyway, an update on muh l33t opinion of Aion...
Immediate Dislikes:
- *Plastic world textures (euw)
- *Fresco atmosphere (static; unimpressive blurred texture of the "other half")
- *No Auction House/Broker (Everyone can set up their own store at will. Thus, there are 50 people all camped next to an NPC with 50 text bubbles above their heads going, "BUY SHIZZIT HERE!" So, good luck finding the NPC amidst that mess.)
- *Large walls of dialogue text become monotonous and you feel as though you have very little input in the conversation other than just saying something minor to progress the conversation to the following wall of dialogue text. This is something that just causes you to lose interest and ends up with you just grabbing quests to do them to get out of the area.
- *The graphics feel very WoW-esque. Max settings don't put up a fight (I get an average of 140fps for ffs) and there's very little to show for it. It feels bland.
My solutions would be to give players the option of having a 3D-generated atmosphere and sky, instead of that ghastly fresco. Get rid of player-based shops and integrate an auction house/broker of sorts. Regarding the world textures... Seriously, they need way, way, way more detail. I want grass and plants that react to physics, not those stiff cardboard-like things, and definitely not terrain that looks as though it came out of a clay shop.
Immediate likes:
- *Combat is touch-and-go. You need to think it through and you need to keep on your toes, or you'll die. It isn't a matter of standing still and spamming spells/skills and hoping for the best
- *Combat animations are very, very nice to look at and you feel "involved."
- *Character graphics are pretty detailed and customisation is pretty much endless. Character graphics are by far the best texture-wise and detail-wise.
- *The concept of adaptive story lines. I haven't seen much of this yet, so I can't say.
- *Every other primary quest has a short cutscene reminiscent of GuildWars' style of story-telling. It's nice, although sometimes feels too short to be very meaningful.
I love the combat, I love the entire idea behind Aion... But omf... It's not at all what I had expected regarding the hype. And, as flamed as I might get for this, it feels like a frikkin' WoW-clone, textures et al. The only thing that sets it apart, so far, is the combat, which feels much more fluid...
I'd really like to know what the rest of you think, in detail... I can't make my mind up about this game... What I like, I love, what I dislike... Ugh... There are F2P games that are way, way more detailed.
All along people have said it's like WoW with wings
If you're looking for something completely and utterly different to try - Ryzom. One of the best and definitely the most atmospheric MMO I've ever played (seasons affect crafting, animals migrate and form herds etc.), but I just can't get into such a sandbox game.
Anyhoo, hope you somehow get into Aion. It's definitely turned out very different to what I was expecting in 2006 when I found out about it.

Makes two of us...
Never heard the WoW with wings bit before thoughBut sadly, it seems more and more true... I'm giving it some time before I make my mind up... Assuming I can -.-'
Ryzom doesn't interest me in the slightestNever has, unlikely that it ever will.
So, what did you expect Aion to be like?
