Three weeks into the Nation’s Cup, South Africa has had some mixed results. The Nation’s Cup is played to EA’s game BattleField 3.
The first match against Finland on 27 January 2012 was nothing if controversial. Unfortunately South Africa lost this match.
The second match, held on Sunday 5 February 2012, was against Belgium, and the South African Team showed ‘true grit’ by making the Belgians fight hard for every single point. The Belgians are well known for their prowess in eSports. Team South Africa in their hard fought match lost the first round and won the second round. However, Team SA unfortunately lost on points.
It should be remembered that this is the first year that South Africa has participated in an online championships of this nature!
Thus Team SA was under pressure!
Nevertheless, Team South Africa was determined to do better against Australia. After some scheduling problems, the game was set to take place at 13H00 on Sunday, 19 February 2012.
It seemed as though all the odds were against South Africa, as even the international community expected Australia to win.
Latency too posed a problem. As a result of the poor latency, only 10 of our 11 players in the team were able to play. AJ 'Assassin' Herbst’s latency playing with his 3g connection was well over 400 ping and it was just far too high for him to compete effectively. However. “Assassin” remained on Teamspeak with the team and was still able to make a real contribution to the game and the success of the team.
Sheraaz “ Zaarehs” Nunnian (from East London) had worked out the tactics, and guided the team through a very difficult game.
The SA team had to play ‘a cat and mouse’ as Australia had a high ground advantage - playing from on top of the buildings – and to make it worse, they too had air superiority,
As a result of the SA team’s aircraft being kept out of the game, the SA team had to keep low, stay out of sight, and move in-between rubble, wrecked buildings and vegetation.
Even with all these disadvantages, the team played like stars, giving it all they could to win the first round 13-0, and then to go on to win the second round 23-0 making it a match win with 36-0.
The team was extremely happy with this win, as now it is clear that SA can take on the rest of the world.
The team that played is:
Chris ‘Bloodslug’ Hart,
Brandon 'ChAoTiCK' Clidaras,
Daniel 'Crincler' Towse,
Kyle ‘Cromedome’ Burton,
Ricky 'Jalgorty' Schlenk,
AJ 'Assassin' Herbst,
Riaan 'EasyKill' Vrey,
Matt “Lt-Matt”,
Reinhardt 'PeStil3nc3' van Rooyen,
Renier 'Sabrefox91o' van Rooyen,
Sheraaz 'ZAAREHS' Nunnian and
MJ 'Vermaak' Vermaak.
Special thanks must be extended to MWEB GameZone. MWEB GameZone supports the official South African National Team preparations by providing them with their own Battlefield 3™ Clan server, a practice server in the UK, as well as a Teamspeak server for the duration of the Nation's Cup to enable communication between the players.
