I just got off a 15min phone call with someone trying to run a scam on me. So I figured I should give people a heads up.
So someone (Indian man with quite a thick Indian accent) phones me at home claiming to be from an I.T company, the name of which I could never fully discern even after him saying it multiple times. He tells me that my computer is infected with some virus and is spamming and infecting other people and that he is a technicon supplied by Microsoft to all registered Windows customers. I try asking how he has landed up with my information and exactly who signed up for his services but he never fully answers the questions.
So I decide to see how full of shit this guy is and what exactly is he playing at so I go along with his instructions. The guy spends a good 15mins trying to convince me just how infected my computer is by getting me to go through my windows event logs and checking out all the errors and saying that is the work of this virus. Of course no anti-virus can detect said virus, mostly because it's fake, and that I must follow his instructions.
Then comes the pay off, he directs me to a site (www . support . me) which just redirects to a LogMeIn remote support session. In order to activate this session you need a 6digit pairing key, similar to bluetooth, which logs you into the session and allows remote administration of your machine. So this gentleman tries to convince me that I'm in possession of this key as it was given to me by Microsoft, presumably to backup his windows techie story. Of course I know nothing of this key so he says that it's no problem he'll get his "level 5 windows technicon" to pull up my key for me.
At this point I jump off the crazy bus and ask if he might not need a level 6 technicon for the job :P and then kindly request he never phone my number again as I put down the phone. He still phones me 3 times after trying to convince me he is legit saying something about if this was a scam... *I hang up*.
Anyways I hope no-one gets caught out by these people.
