I do think that getting photo realistic graphics will be possible soon-ish, but like Blackhand said, getting it to render in real-time is another story altogether. Also, even when we get photo-realistic graphics, we'll always find new part to the graphics to improve on visually, and then find way to improve computationally.

Hopefully, though, we'll get to a plateau soon, so that dev's can start thinking about gameplay and storytelling again.
Rendering in real time , in a game is very different to lets say 3Ds or a Movie , your thinking massive processing power
yet the cell processors far exceed this , even the ones that are currently on the PS3 , have barely been tapped
and when it comes down to it its about layering , its not like they at some point want to create the game as you move trough it (just a side note that would mean the game would be Diff for everyone that played it ) it would be based on a set of Rules
this is what the Famas looks like so the core of it will already be created , this is the rendering your talking about the initially take a while to do , in your 3D aplication of choice the ones that takes days to render. But once done saved and transcoded , when you recall that image its not re rendering just re displaying.In short very possible
