Why doesn't Lionhead just stop pretending to be a AAA developer and go make casual games.
They aren't mutually exclusive, and making them doesn't subtract from them being a AAA developers. The ideas they chose to focus on and what they consider important is what subtracts from them being a AAA dev. Lets not mention their last 3 projects have been Milo, Fable the Journey and Fable heroes.
What do you mean the ideas they focus on? All Lionhead Games have had a cartoony, casual feel to them way back since Black & White 1. While I personally didn't really enjoy Fable 3 it was a solid, stable game. So they choose to make something for someone other than the die hard keyboard/controller jockeys what wrong with that?
Their last 3 Project where of one series? Why is that strange?
Infinity Ward & Treyarch have been making Call of Duty for the last 10 years. Bungie doing the same with Halo, Naughty Dog with Uncharted, Santa Monica with God of War.
A Good example of personal preference:
Like I've said before; so what if something doesn't appeal to the "core"? We aren't the be all and end all of the gaming market. A More casual centric marking is making billions, look at the Wii, DS and even Kinect titles. As long as the studio gives their target audience what they what and make good quality games I see no problem with it.

Fable 1 to 3 are freaking awesome games though
I haven't played Fable 3 but from axillary evidence it would be reasonable to conclude it was hardly 'freaking awesome'.
Anyway ok fine since you demand it I'll spell things out more clearly.
I'll use Fable 2 as my reference since it's the last Fable game I played. I enjoyed the game at least for the most part until it got to the epically bad ending. What annoyed me about that game were all the side experiences they choose to focus on instead of filling out the core experience more. The entire relationship/marriage mini-game was emphasized both in game and in many pre-game interviews to the point where it really added nothing to the core game itself and due to the diverted resources detracted from what you wanted to play. So instead of having a shallow and meaningless courtship side mission they could and should have focused on having more meaningful and interesting characters in the world. The 'working' mini-games and the property system were an interesting way of accruing wealth but then they neglected to including meaningful gameplay reasons for actually getting money since you could get the best weapon less than half way through the game. So that just became a wealth creation cycle completely separate from the core experience.
I guess what I am trying to say is that Lionhead have kind of forgotten the core values of games, AAA or casual, and that they have increasingly focused more on the superficial.
Fable 2 made many improvements over Fable 1, Fable 3 was more of a AC Brotherhood to Fable 2 than something entirely new.
For me personally the Marriage mini-game and wealth gather only got truly bland if Fable 3. In 2 I enjoyed the plot and some of the characters and mostly ignored the "social" mechanics. Though I can see the whole working for Money mechanic especially when you start off being a blacksmith and later have enough money to buy shops which then bring in the $$$. But in my experience all these where optional. Like you said, you got the best weapons about half way through the game so other than choosing to play these added aspects they really didn't have any gaming value, they did add to the feel of the world for me.
While one could argue, like you have, that they have forgotten the core values of game, one could also argue that they are trying, and have thus far failed, to bring something new in. But I would berate them from Aiming for the stars and only reaching the stratosphere. I much prefer a Studio that tries and fails to bring new mechanics or element into their games than a studio who plays it safe and pumps out the same old tripe year after year.

Well that's the thing, it's not that they have these awesome ideas that they just couldn't pull off, it's that their ideas are going in the wrong direction. I understand they want to broaden the experience, the problem being what they add is mostly superficial rather than adding systems which prop up and enhance the core experience. So don't just add stuff to have more stuff in your game, add stuff that makes your game better. But I would berate them from Aiming for the stars and only reaching the stratosphere.![]()
Started playing Fable III on the weekend, was surprised by the amount of buzz that the series had when I got into the office yesterday morning.
That's what she said.
