DarthMol's List of Great Free Games

"Free" and "Games", two beautiful words that when joined together become a wonderful thing... sometimes. While all free games are free (usually), not all free games are good. Yet every now and then a real gem comes along. I've been wanting to put together this list for a while now and the prospect of winning a PS3 has been that last bit of motivation needed. Please note, this is not a list of F2P games.

To begin with I want to point you in the direction of some great resources for finding free games. The ultimate list of Free Games has been compiled by Megazell in his Free And Legal PC Games List! which currently has 2410 games listed.
I am also indebted to PC Gamer's Best Free Games of the Week for directing me to many great time wasters.

Alright, now for the games. I will be adding to this list during the week so look out for subsequent posts, also, feel free to add any comments especially if you have tried out any of the games, another viewpoint is always welcome.

Stealth Bastard: Tactical Espionage Arsehole

Thanks to Sonic the Hedgehog, I have always loved platformers and so SB already had me on that. Described as the illegitimate love-child of Metal Gear Solid and Super Meat Boy, SB sees you hastily sneaking in the shadows to avoid certain and immediate death. The real-time shadows and lighting effects are a stand out feature as you avoid detection, jump through vents and hack terminals just like a real Tactical Espionage Arsehole.

In all seriousness, SB is a solid platformer that involves a bit of problem solving as you figure out how to complete the level without dying. The quicker you can do it, the better, as your time is recorded and placed on a leaderboard. The game can get frustrating at times but it's more of a case of getting the timing of jumps right and working out the best way to get through the level. It's a good challenge. There is an option of skipping the level if you are finding it especially tricky.

Once you've completed the developer's levels you have a multitude of user created maps from which to choose so this game can keep you busy for a good while.

All in all Stealth Bastard provides a challenging yet entertaining experience. The graphics are appealing, the gameplay is polished and I quite liked the funky soundtrack. So give it a go and be prepared to die a lot.

Download Stealth Bastard here.

Nitronic Rush

Nitronic Rush is an experimental survival driving game developed by students at Digipen. They've built the game from scratch which is a phenomenal achievement considering how good the game looks and plays. Basically, playing Nitronic Rush involves using the car’s many abilities (including boost, wings, and jump), to avoid obstacles that the city throws at you. This game makes me think of Trackmania and going back even further, good old Stunts, except that it's wrapped up in a gorgeous Tron-inspired package.

The different game modes will keep you busy for quite a while. Story mode is relatively easy and is a good way to learn the mechanics of the game, it also presents a modicum of a plot in that your vehicle is an anti-virus program that needs to reach the virus infected core in order to repair it. Once you have developed some skill then it's time to tackle the Hardcore and Challenge modes, these will take a fair bit longer to master.

One requirement that is a must for this game is to have a controller (360 or similar with dual analogues), the game was designed with a controller in mind therefore, while it is possible to play with the keyboard, it is much easier with the controller. The main reason for this is that your left analogue stick will control the steering and the right stick will control the small boost jets on your car that enable you to flip your car over or do barrel rolls.

On the negative side, this game can get rather frustrating, especially on the Hardcore levels where you will need to pull of certain flips or jumps with precision or risk falling off the track and starting from the last checkpoint again. The game isn't too forgiving when it comes to executing these moves.

It'd be remiss of me if I didn't mention the fantastic soundtrack that accompanies your driving endeavours. The game boasts some superb electro-house inspired tracks and playing this game with the volume pumped up is exhilarating. I just checked out the official website before writing up this brief overview and was delighted to find that the game's soundtrack is available for download.

Nitronic Rush is an appeaing package. Attractive graphics, great music and fun gameplay, at R0.00 it's a deal not to be missed.

Get the game from the official website.

Gravity Bone

There are some gaming experiences that just stick in your mind. The ending of this short and intriguing (spy? agent? hitman?) game manages to engage you emotionally more than many bigger games.

This free game's art style will capture your attention and draw you into the world you find yourself in.

Gravity bone is just one of those games you have to experience for yourself, all I can say is that it has one of the most attention grabbing intros and a really well done ending. If you enjoy this game then you might be interested in the sequal Thirty Flights of Loving which is currently funded by the Idle Thumbs Kickstarter.

Grab the game from the developer's website blendogames.com.

Kingdom Rush

This is a browser based Tower Defence game that adds in some nifty features and has a good amount of depth. One of the first things that sets KD apart from other Td's is the use of blocking towers. Rather than form a physical barrier the barracks send out knights to fight the oncoming hoard. The wave units will stop and engage in combat with the knights allowing your other towers more time to do damage.

You get four types of tower and each type is upgradeable. At a certain level of upgrading you can choose between two variations of the tower with different powers and abilities. This, mixed with a fair variety of enemy types (with varying weaknesses and resistances) and 2 support spells produces a fair amount of depth requiring you to think and rethink your strategy.

As you progress through the main missions you unlock points that can be used to buff the strength and abilities of your towers along with your 2 spells. These upgrades are essential for completing later levels. There are also challenges that you can do on completed levels, you may find you'll need to do some of these for the upgrade points so that you are able to complete later levels.

Kingdom Rush is addictive and will suck away your time. You'll find this isn't one of those Td's where you build and then sit back and wait to see if your defense holds, you'll be actively using the spells and timing upgrades to ensure victory.

You can play Kingdom Rush at Armor Games or if you want achievements at Kongregate.
