How to make your PC controller an Xbox360 Controller

A lot of developers these days only include in their PC game (ports) support for Xbox360 controllers. If you, like me happen to own a slightly older controller (such as my Logitech Rumblepad 2) you may find this quite annoying or frustrating. From a technical point of view, what has happened is a shift to the new XInput standard from the old DInput (for more info check out the article on wikipedia)

Fortunately there is an easy work-around to trick the new games into treating your DInput controller as an XInput one. x360ce is a simple program that allows you to do this, it is fairly simple to run. You copy the x360ce.exe into the folder where the game's .exe is and run it, configure your controls and voila the game "correctly" detects your DInput device as an Xbox360 controller. Most of the time it is as simple as that but there are a few games where you'll need to follow the additional steps in the wiki.

I've found this little program to be extremely useful, hopefully you do too.

Here is the website for x360ce. Just follow the instructions and you're good to go. Enjoy!

P.S. if you are looking at getting a new controller then be sure to get one that supports XInput. Logitech's F310, F510 and F710 have a nifty switch on them to switch between DInput and XInput so you get the best of both worlds.
