Reading most of this, I don't think Mweb is to blame here. If other ISP acccounts produce similar results, then the fault is line, exchange or some form of Telkom property. I know you say you rent the line from Mweb etc, but at the end of the day, it is still Telkom infrastructure and as much as Mweb may try, if Telkom does nothing, Mweb can do zip.

    Good luck mate.

Normally only strikes after about 7pm at night, so I suspect exchange congestion has something to do with it. Telkom hasn't been able to resolve it, in spite of logging three or four tickets with them regarding it. It is ISP independent though, as I get the same latency on a Telkom account. Next time I run into the issue, I'm going to give Telkom a call and see what the line latency and exchange congestion are like then and there.
Orb you just hit the nail on the head it is Exchange congestion during peak times, I have logged 4 tickets with Telkom in the past 2 months, The head techie visited my house and explained that when the exhange is congested Telkom tries to save some bucks on the upgrade by not allowing for further expansion. This means that by the time they sort the original issue out with an upgrade and installed the new hardware the exchange is congested again due to the rapid fixed line expansion....

Its not congestion and now after telkom "fixed" stuff my latency is horrific the whole time. Cant remember when last i played a proper online game with a latency below 50.

Mweb guaranteed me that it's not congestion

@Densweep - it is mweb fault i pay them for the line with the promise of better and faster service not Telkom. I know the issue is with telkom but i mean 3 months and not once a tech has been to my place to test the line from here. Telkom and Mweb has a service agreement. Surely mweb could have done something to fix this in 3 months!

My last resort will be to switch to amobia.co.za, they offer 3mb uncapped* for R799 with a 10 gig 3 day rolling cap. Has anyone been with them? Can anyone tell me what they are like?

I just dont understand it my download speeds is around 300kb/s on torrents and its constant how can my latency to another mweb server in South africa fluctuate this much

    Default Same problem here

    Hey Some Guy,

I have the same problem on my side. I stay in Alberton (JHB South) and in January my line, which hadn't given me problems for three years, started its nonsense. My previous router was struct by lightning and popped its surge arrester so I bought the Trendnet and things haven't been great since then. I suspected the router, but from your thread it sounds like it wont be that. I was with Telkom ISP but I figured after super-crap service that I would try to get as far away from them as possible (unfortunately you cannot escape their infrastructure). I have thus moved to Axxess but the problem is no better - I didn't expect it to be but at least its cheaper.

The Telkom technician has come out but he was useless. I've logged the fault again, I'm certain it is linked to exchange congestion because it peaks during the evening and weekends but I just don't know how to get Telkom to take it seriously. They tell me to upgrade my line, but why should I pay more for the same horrible service. The congestion will get no better with a bigger line.

Does anyone know the process of getting Telkom to consider upgrading an exchange?

    Regards,
    Brian

What you can maybe do is complain at the highest level...write Pinky Moholi an email and explain it to them. This is what I did and the exchange here has recently been upgraded. Will see how long it takes though before it gets congested again.

I have the same problem for more than 5 months now, I emailed Pinky but she is not replying send the email again this morning. Our exchange is definately congested I have a screenie from the isp to proove it. The line only suffer during peak times in the evenings and on weekends. Telkom has been to my place 5 times already and keep telling me the same bs. I am going to try hellopeter.com next. So fed up with this crap. My ping to local Cape Town servers jump to 2500 ms in peak times, took screenies over 3-4 months and also sent them in the email. No luck as of yet.

Telkom only pitches to investigate the problem in non peak hrs therefor they keep telling me the same bs. They asked me to send them reports when it happens which I also did. NOTHING HAPPENS with them they are useless.... I think there is around 6-10 calls logged on my line with the same problem. They can see it everytime I call and tell me that we see you had this problem for a while. FFS so over this BS of internet in our country! The best part is after the techie visits and do not seem to fix the problem they just close the ticket to get it of their system and send me a notification that it is closed. This is about a 3 week cycle that repeats itself over and over.....

Feel like bomming a Telkom van, That will make the news

When I sent them the email, I also made a complaint on Hello Peter and I send that with the email. I actually got phoned by a lady from Pinky's office and they did sort out our exchange here.

I am guessing they get a lot of these emails with problems and I may have been lucky to get a response from them. They even gave me the email and phone number of the tech that works in the exchange so I can contact him directly if there are any problems.
