Default Zork and text based adventure games

Some of us old timers played games before there were such nifty things as graphics. Some of us may have even learned to read and write (or at least type) while playing text based adventure games. One of the biggest of those was the Zork series.

I'm sure there are some of us here where the words "West of house. You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here." will conjure up memories of drawing maps on block paper, and slowly going insane trying to figure out the puzzles. Some of you might be silently screaming "Look in mailbox!". Some might still be afraid that if they go into the dark, they will be eaten by a Grue.

I think these sort of games may also have contributed to my love of reading books rather than watching TV or movies, because there is a big difference in just seeing something as opposed to imagining it.

I agree with you Matt. I also fell in love with ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery), which owed a lot to Zork. ADOM was the most beautiful game I have ever played

Now if only I can pull an Inception on myself and design my own dreams....
