You know that this is from Softpedia right? They are known for sensationalizing. The fact here is that this is a really old scenario used by many companies in the past. They can ask as much as they want for it, you either pay the price or don't buy it.
Or if you're like me you buy second hand for cheap cheap. Without any warranty though, there's always a risk.
