Default 2 Girls and Tomb Raider 3

So one of THE best gaming memories I have, is that of myself and a friend playing this new Tomb Raider game.

Both of us new to PC gaming, started this adventure together. With our birthdays only 4 days apart, we both asked for Tomb Raider 3 as presents. Now it's interesting how we came to know about the game. There was this ad on tv back in the day. A guy sitting at his PC watching a video of Lara Croft in her Jeep or something like that, sipping coffee out of his Lara Croft mug. His wife comes downstairs and tells him to come to bed. And that's all I can remember. The details are murky... this was 13 years ago so it's to be expected. But that ad was enough to make us buy this game.

Anyway, so we started playing this game either side by side or on our own at home. Now this was the days before internet (well at least in my world) and before cellphones. I remember if one of us got stuck in some part, or we found a new level, we'd call each other up immediately. I'd run down the hall and punch in the numbers and would describe exactly what I did... This is how we helped each other play through Tomb Raider 3. I think the game would not have been such a good memory for me if it was not for my friend playing it with me. Having sleepovers and staying up till 12 just to get to the next part...

The best memory I have of the game however, is in the first level, you get to a part where this statue of the Hindu god is and you have to get out of the room somehow. This took us both 3 months, yes that long, to figure out. I finally found the block you needed to move by accident and first thing, ran down the hall to make that phone call.

Tomb Raider 3 is still my favourite game of all time, because it reminds me of those good times. I always look back to that moment and think that's the reason I am such a passionate gamer today.

So can you remember when Tomb Raider used to be THAT awesome?

I do kinda miss those days before instantly accessible information aka the Internet, when getting stuck meant getting STUCK and having to battle your way through a game and sort of get together with your friend and discuss your various experiences and helping each other. Now if you get stuck for more than 10s most games usually just give you the answer or you just look it up on a gazillion walkthroughs and game guides.

Yes I agree, getting stuck was all part of the game and getting past it was amazing. But that was when we were kids. Today I just don't have time for that anymore. So walkthroughs are a blessing when you really just want to get it done. But there is that sense of achievement when you do it on your own.

Oh yeah for sure, also games design has improved a hell of a lot since those times so you are rarely asked to JUST KNOW what you are suppose to do with zero clues to the correct action.

It was funny when you got stuck and found a possible "solution" like jumping over a gap, which is actually impossible to do, but it's so close every-time that you start to think if you do a few perfect jump over and over you'd eventually succeed.

You didn't have information like, if you walk to the edge and gave two steps backwards, your next jump would be at peak. Or something like that...
