Gunstar Heroes was a two player game for the Sega Genesis. The key design feature that made it great game was the weapon system. Each character had a gun with two ammo slots. In each of these ammo slots, you could have one of four ammo types, and depending on how you combined them, you'd get different effects from your weapon. This opened up a simple, yet effective 'build' system that we often see in modern games. The fact that the different ammo types dropped often meant that you'd play through a level with several different build, as different ones would work better against different enemies.
Add to that solid art direction, great sound, wonderful, memorable level design, and some highly entertaining boss fights, and you have a classic; so good a classic, that it was released on XBLA and PSN in 2009, so check it out!
