Something I myself sort of forgot to remember - and seemingly no one else did: the high score list in arcade games!
All you young ones might not remember, but in the olden days, if you fed the beast on a regular basis (20c coins), studied at the shoulder of your elders (shoulder surfed), and did the rituals (played often), you earned the honour of having your named engraved on the plaque of remembrance - THE HIGH SCORE LIST!
Remember:
This was before the days of saved games.
Before the days of walkthroughs.
Before the days of FAQ's.
Before the days of the interwebs....
Before the days of LAN....
Tremble and feel weak because it was dark days and friends were few...
I remember the first time I got my name on a high score list. The initial joy! Then frustration to figure out the arcane way of selecting letters. The frustration of coming up with a GOOD 3 letter acronym before time run out. And the JOY when you returned at a later date and your 3 letters was still on the score list. Lesser mortals had not dragged you from the throne!
Every time I see a high score list I remember the Seinfeld Frogger episode when George discovered his name still on the high score list of a frogger game.
