I bought a 250gig Slim with Gears of War 3 for 3k seven months ago and it's still going strong .

The old phat versions have a problem with the RROD.

I saw Kalahari selling a a 250gig Slim with Gears of War 3 and Forza 4 for 3k, pretty good deal imo.

BT always have Xbox bundles in stock and Incredible Connection as well.

I have the old PHAT halo 3 themed one and its coming up on 5 years now and going strong. all ive done is greased the fan in the power brick cause it was making a noise gonna swap out the thermal paste one the board soon as well when i get a gap hardware techie FTW!!!

I would recommend the 250 gig slim because that HDD space is going to be used to install all the game files to. By doing that you are taking strain off the xbox because the disk is then only used to "authenticate" the game, then the dvd drive is shut down to conserve power, thus reducing wear and tear on the disk drive and ultimately reducing your chance of a RROD.

A lot of people say this doesnt help but ive tested it... installed games on the hard drive are played off the hard drive. The game doesnt boot if there is no disk in the dvd drive at startup, however, once the game has started up and authenticated (assuming your xbox is in pieces like my spare one) you can remove the disk entirely and still play the game.

    Hope this helps

    edit**

Also, lie the slim xbox on its side with the side vent facing upwards, improves cooling not by much but its something, and anything to improve performance and life span is good

Good call, and don't buy it from Microsoft, they rip you off. And it's way cheaper to sommer buy a 12 month pack (they don't give this option on XBL for SA accounts so you have to get it from a 3rd party)

They email you the code as soon as you buy it.

You should also decide if you want an SA account, or if you want to spoof a UK or US account. The main difference is in the Marketplace, if you have a UK or US account, there are loads more games available to buy, and Indie games as well. The SA marketplace is still pretty bare, but it's getting more content slowly, and we don't get any Indie games.

    EDIT:
    SA: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-ZA/Ga...By=ReleaseDate
    UK: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-BG/Ga...By=ReleaseDate
    US: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Ga...By=ReleaseDate

If you want to see how many full games there are, click on Games on Demand, because if you're on all games, then you'll see loads that just have add-ons, promo videos or avatar gear, but you can't even get the game.

Oh, and you should get Trials Evolution

So I know there are various versions of the Xbox to buy what should I get??

What size should I purchase, and am I allowed to changed the hard drive if I want more space??

How much should I expect to pay for just a standard Console pack eg: Console, one remote, and cables. Excl games?

I think that's all the questions I have for now.

    All advice is appreciated

    Thanks

I'm not gonna sway you from your choice but I think a PS3 is better than any Xbox 360, because of several reason but if you got your mind locked on a Xbox 360 go ahead

I have an XBox and a PS3, and I think that the PS3 is probably a better machine, but I still prefer the xbox for gaming, probably because I got it first, and more people I know have xboxes, so it's my primary gaming console, but I do prefer XBox Live to PSN, and the XBox controller to the PS3 controller. Either way, most games come out on both platforms, so that's not a major issue, PS3 probably has more really good exclusives though. I think the thing that should really sway you one way or the other is what console your friends have because if you get the same, then you can swap games, and play with/against them online.
