I have the old PHAT halo 3 themed one and its coming up on 5 years now and going strong. all ive done is greased the fan in the power brick cause it was making a noisegonna swap out the thermal paste one the board soon as well when i get a gap
hardware techie FTW!!!
I would recommend the 250 gig slim because that HDD space is going to be used to install all the game files to. By doing that you are taking strain off the xbox because the disk is then only used to "authenticate" the game, then the dvd drive is shut down to conserve power, thus reducing wear and tear on the disk drive and ultimately reducing your chance of a RROD.
A lot of people say this doesnt help but ive tested it... installed games on the hard drive are played off the hard drive. The game doesnt boot if there is no disk in the dvd drive at startup, however, once the game has started up and authenticated (assuming your xbox is in pieces like my spare one) you can remove the disk entirely and still play the game.
Hope this helps

Also, lie the slim xbox on its side with the side vent facing upwards, improves coolingnot by much but its something, and anything to improve performance and life span is good
