I am now seriously considering moving across to Afrihost from WebAfrica - I'd literally be paying only R80 more than I'm paying right now for a capped line.
Guess I'm going to be running some latency tests tonight.
Let me know re that shadow, i need to signup for ADSL again since i moved, obv less pings betters
That's the only thing that's been holding me back so far - Afrihost provisions their bandwidth via Seacom, which loves going down on a regular basis, and other than that there's usually a 30 - 50ms additional delay when pinging one of the London exchanges.
Given the extra distance involved, I have my doubts there'll be a way around that. But I'll see.
Sounds promising, but does anyone know if this whole telkom minimum speed upgrade thing will apply to other sp's. If telkom's entry level becomes 1MBps, will that mean AfriHost's 384Kbps subscribers will also be automatically upgraded to 1MBps? At the same price? 'Coz if not, then I'd hate to be tied in to a slower uncapped deal.
I asked Cybersmart to upgrade my line from 1MB Something to 1MB uncapped, this was last Monday, and I am STILL waiting... I have phoned and emails them continuously, and their staff has no effing idea what is up!!!
FFS, have been with Cybersmart for so long, their line speeds are great, but they have the SHITTEST customer ethic and worst contact centre ever... if stuff works then everything is fine, but if you have any other request you may as well just eat off your own face..
RRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNTTTTTTTTTTTTTT TTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do these include installation? Are they unshaped deals?

Based on a nice long feedback thread on myBB, they do have an AUP in place, and it is a shaped account. Anecdotal evidence suggests that torrents get shaped quite heavily during office hours (Not that it affects me, I never use them).
You do get throttled based on usage over a 30-day rolling period, but they seem fairly lenient about it - one user decided to push the limits on his 4Mbps line and got throttled down to about 2Mbps after hitting the 140GB mark. Apparently Afrihost have increased the threshold since then.
Based on what I read there Afrihost is selling their own solution using the IS backbone - so the policies aren't quite as draconian as they were in the past. I speak under correction here, of course.Originally Posted by James
Based on what someone on IRC said it may seem that they are still somewhat draconian with their throttling, though this was on a 384kbps line. Will ask when he tried their service (think it may have been that time that they basically gave away their uncapped accounts for a month at like a few rand).
