Malfunctioning cellphone or simcard?

I took my Samsung Star to the Cell C shop this saturday as it has been malfunctioning more and more often, and was also not seeing my sim card sporadically. They tell me that it should take 2-3 weeks to get it seen to.

The Samsung Star was also struggling to scroll between screens, and sometimes the screen would go into power saving mode while I was listening to my cellphone's radio, but pressing the unlock button would not turn the screen back on. To wake my cellphone up properly, I had to take the battery out and leave it for several minutes before replacing it and switching the phone on again.

My mother very kindly lent me her old cell, but it the same thing has been happening so far as detecting the sim card is concerned.

Have you any idea why this might be?

I had the exact same experience with mine threw it away eventually and upgraded to a blackberry :P
