Whats worked for me was just speaking to them and getting closure, kinda knowing why and what happened, because when you with someone for so long you become interlinked with them. This will kill any passive thoughts or sad moments and you will feel better.

After this, you basically dont really speak to them, you dont have to avoid them though. Try and figure out what you want because this is the time where you can pick up some nasty habits or people you do not need. Took me roughly 7 months to get over my last one, but once i figured out my "path" I went out to a braai all refreshed and met a lovely girl im still dating

you play guitar!? Yes! Nothing heals more than shredding a solo or solo moshing in your room in front of thousands of imaginary fans! No shame!!

I find what works best is distracting myself with something productive and making it my mission Gym helps a load. Apart from the endorphins, which help make you happy, you feel like you're improving yourself and that your ex is missing out on what is becoming a desirable piece of ass Plus, the physical pain is another distraction from the emotional suckage

Something else that helps is going out as much as possible. For a good 2-3 weeks after my last breakup I went out every single night...nothing hectic...everything from coffee, to movies, and the occasional binge drink! But I found myself connecting with people I hadn't made the time to see in a good while, and through them I met new people and before I knew it I was hopelessly stalking someone else
