Theoatmeal is awesome!
Shoreham - Support from a popular web cartoonist is re-energising a decades-long effort to restore a decrepit, 110-year-old old laboratory once used by visionary scientist Nikola Tesla.
In little more than a week, tens of thousands of donors from more than 100 countries have donated more than $1m online to pay for the restoration of Tesla's Wardenclyffe laboratory on Long Island, about 105km east of New York City.
Cartoonist Matthew Inman, who runs theoatmeal.com, stepped in this month and urged readers to back the project. The original goal was $850 000, but Inman said the funds have kept pouring in.
He said organisers may not only be able to buy the $1.6m property, but have enough left over to start work on a museum and science centre.
