40Mbps uncapped DSL will happen in SA
MWEB, Web Africa, Vox Telecom and Afrihost say that they will definitely launch a 40Mbps uncapped DSL service when Telkom launches its 20Mbps and 40Mbps DSL services

Im curious Telkom shows a 10mb/s line for R1972 per month (line rental the works) does that mean that 40mb/s will run you R8 grand out of pocket? It just seems insane. I Play R1972 ever 3 months for 20mb/s uncapped line, free landline calls and cheap international calls.
By comparison BT's entry level uncapped line is a 16mb per second for £36 which is about R470 per month. This also includes line rental everything.
Why exactly is it so expensive for Data in SA? Is it because of the SEACOM cables etc or Telkom's monopoly or what.
(Before someone says something, Im not bashing or bragging, I am honestly curious.)
Still waiting for stable 4mbs![]()

It's kind of a only because of Telkom monolopy. The problem is, they own all of the ADSL infrastructure in the country, which is a huge deal. Other companies like DFA (Dark Fibre Africa) and Neotel have been laying their own fibre infrastructure, but it's pretty much dwarfed by Telkom's huge last mile network. It will take years, and billions of Rands for any company to come close to what Telkom owns in terms of national telecoms infrastructure. Also, we don't have any true Tier 1 ISPs in our country.
The other problem I think is, we have so much bandwidth available now with the Seacom and other cables being built, but we don't have the infrastructure to support big capacity. Maybe Telkom have some debts to pay off and they charging all their consumers more than what they're supposed to be. They actually are come to think of it.
They didn't want to support Local Loop Unbundling either, and will continue to charge consumers for a telephone line AND a data line, although both of them are unrelated. So for instance, you pay for a telephone line, even if you never use it. That's just the type of crappy company Telkom is. I think it kinda comes down to some more gracy train riding as well in the end.
I must say, the other ISPs in this country have made big changes to what it used to be like, with forcing Telkom to become part of the mutual interconnect rates. They're also forcing better service delivery from Telkom by delivering service much better than Telkom is at the moment. Anyway, Telkom should really start pulling a bit of finger and developing SA broadband, rather than holding us back and delivering a shitty service.
Well, maybe up to a certain point is it a typical South African problem. In terms of gravy train riding, but it's always been up to the private sector to improve and build on anything in this country. Our governmental organizations fail hard so we can't rely on them.
I also wouldn't say the infrastructure is crumbling. It must just be upgraded, but Telkom just isn't pro-active enough. They take their their sweet damn time getting anything right. At least they've upgraded most major exchanges with up-to-spec equipment, so we are at least using current technology. But ja...As I said, wouldn't mind to have it going at a faster tempo.. African time!
Telkom is at the end of the day a public entity and as such will always be held back by government bureaucracy and poor standards of accountability.
On the other hand it isn't feasible for various private firms to lay individual cables along the sea floor to connect to the world. The sucky fact is that we need their infrastructure and their lack of profit motivation to ensure everyone gets a connection.
It would be great to have the internet services privatised but I'm also sure that new subscribers would cover plenty of the installation and we could see a very capitalistic agenda being run.
In the end it comes down to economics and supply, privatisation vs public enterprise and through all this we are stuck in the centre waiting a working system.

I'm still waiting for my 384kbps to 1mbps.
Nice Telkom, now let other ISP's test your MSAN's 40Mbps, 20Mbps services. Don't be stingy now....
I just see 40Mbps uncapped costing over R4000.
