Priced well considering it's a new console, remember when the Xbox360 and Playstaion 3 came out? They were pretty highly priced as well, and looking at it's pricing it's aimed at the PS3/XBOX.
Wii U Basic (predicted Retail price) ~R2999
    Xbox360 250GB ~R2999
    Playstaion 3 160GB ~R2999

Xbox was what? R5000? I do remember the ps3 being R6000 at launch.

Seems to me people want newer and better but are not willing to pay an extremely cheap price (inflation bitches).

If you were to buy a launch PS3 now it would cost you about R10 000.

How dare they ask for a market related price for market related product even though the market's product are old and have decreased in value.

Launch prices are always steep. I'm just not going to be stupid enough to buy it at launch. Don't get me wrong, I do want one. But as this console is just about as powerful as the current generation of competitor products, I'll wait a bit before making a plan to get one.
