    Default Xenonauts: The true successor to the X-com throne.

    There's quite a bit of negativity on the net surrounding the new X-com, so I've decided to make this thread on what is possibly the truest X-com remake out there. Take note I haven't actually played the original X-com, so I can't compare them, but do note that Xenonauts is my first contact with the genre, and I fell in love with it. Before Xenonauts, I had no idea why people were getting so angry at the fact that X-com was being turned into an FPS. Now I understand.

    Anyway, so seeing as most of you don't listen to a word I say when I post about obscure indie titles, I've decided to use pics to convey my message instead.

    This right here is your Geo map. Nothing fancy, certainly not able to rival the AAA X-com in graphics, but it serves its purpose.

    This is the options you get for engaging alien aircraft. I didn't screencap the actual engagement, but you actually engage them in real-time and have tactical commands you can issue to your aircraft, such as tactical manoeuvres that allow you to evade enemy fire, etc. You can also activate and deactivate weapons on your aircraft during the engagement. Not sure if any of this was in the original X-com, so bear with me.

    So you've shot down the ufo, now you send your team in their chopper to head out to the crash site.

    That's right, isometric 2D. Looks awesome in my opinion, but I've got a soft-spot for isometric 2D games. Just two notes that you can see on that screen;

    1 - You can set how many movement points should be held out so that your units can retaliate during the enemy's turn.

    2 - Movement is grid-based. You get a set amount of movement points per character and you choose whether to leave any over or use them all up.

    Oh, and if you wanted to have a peek at what the enemy is doing during their turn, think again. This screen pops up when it's their turn to move.

    Then, as an extra, this is what the soldier screen looks like, where you equip your people. Vehicle and aircraft screens look much the same.

    And then last, but not least, there's a full xenopedia for those who love to read up on the lore of the aliens, weapons, UFOs, vehicles, etc.

    So, that's pretty much it. Just thought that for those guys who aren't quite happy with what they're seeing in X-com: Enemy Unknown I'd post this so they know there's an X-com remake out there that's apparently a lot more true to the original game's roots.

    It's only R160 over at Desura, which is a bit expensive, but still a lot cheaper than the AAA remake. It's still in alpha, but as of two days ago it's only 2 builds away from going into beta. They're still adding a ton of stuff and are planning a lot of improvements. For now, though, the game is pretty solid. It's been eating away at the hours in which I'm supposed to be studying. A true 'just 10 more minutes' game.

    Oh, and it's pretty challenging. I keep getting decimated about an hour into each game. On Easy difficulty.

    Default The true successor to the X-com throne.

    U know there is 2 XCOM remakes in the works? The FPS one that is just called XCOM and the turn based one Enemy Unknown. From what I've read Enemy Unknown is truer successor to the original where as the FPS is more of a re-imagining. What I saw of the re-imagining I liked, having never played the original I guess I am not subject to the biases.

    Enemy unknown, as it looks to me at the moment, looks like what X-COM would have evolved into over the years, the same old TBS-RPG just with updated graphics and gameplay.

    The FPS X-COM can go suck it for all I care.

    Yes, from my OP;

    Judging from the reaction to Enemy Unknown's demo, it seems a lot of the fans of the original game feel that the new one over-simplifies certain features, hence why I made this thread, as Xenonauts is trying to remake the original X-Com and stick as closely to that formula as possible.

    I haven't played the demo for Enemy Unknown myself, but I'm very strongly considering pre-ordering it.

    I absolutely love Xenonauts, but it's currently only in alpha, and I don't want to tire myself of it before it is even fully released.

    My bad, as I read it, it sounded like you where confusing Enemy Unknown for the FPS.

    Like with any other remake there are always going to be the haters, always be those that are stuck in a nostalgic rut. After playing the Demo I was impressed enough. And luckily for me I didn't play the original so can't be tainted by the memory of it.

    Some of those concerns discussed in the video. I think its an interesting take in the video. You are forced to commit to your action.

    I don't quite get this? What's wrong with being disappointed with some of the changes in the new game? Everyone can't like the same thing.

    Having played the original many, many years ago, I downloaded the new Enemy Unknown demo.

    Seems to be just OK. Could only play 2 missions, no tactical Geoscope in the demo.

    I also played the Xenonauts demo, it does feel more true to the original Xcom games. I guess I have to wait until the full release of Enemy Unknown comes out before I can make a proper comparison.

    So I bought the full game, thanks for the heads up on this game.

    Been playing the demo all afternoon, gonna download the full game tomorrow when I get my cap.

    I just hope I can carry my save games across.

    Thanks Graal, this game completely flew under my radar - and I've played almost all the XComs and UFO games. Xenonauts looks as good if not better than the last good UFO game to come out - UFO:Extraterrestrials. Actually, UFO:Extraterrestrials2 is coming out at the end of the year, so you could add that to this thread as a spiritual successor to the old XCom games.
