Default Lexus driver arrested for speeding

A man was arrested for speeding on the N1 highway near old Johannesburg Road in Pretoria on Saturday, the Gauteng Traffic Police's High Speed Unit said.

The 42-year-old was arrested in his Silver Lexus just before 3pm driving at an average speed of 199km/h in a 120km/h zone, spokeswoman Busaphi Nxumalo said.

"It was only after the traffic stop when the provincial officer noticed the 10-year-old son in the vehicle."

    ugh.

Speed enforcement is all about making money in SA. Forget the damn Lexus drivers...they aren't the problem. Pull all the damn deathtraps w/ wheels off the road instead & hunt down people with purchased licenses.

e.g. In Germany people routinely drive 200+...and it works out fine. Why? Because they've got thorough driver license exams that can't be bought and the cars go through regular road-worthiness tests.

Agreed. The only reason 200 seems so outrageous is because they bought their own licences.

The car also plays a big factor.
A while back, I was in Cape Town and I rented one of these Polo Vivo cars (the ones that replaced the City Golf)... I was driving on the N-something and I was zooming, going so fast that I had to counter steer against the wind to keep the car on the road. So eventually, I thought: Hey... This is not my city and not my car, so perhaps I should slow down a little to avoid a ticket. So I looked down and realised I was only doing 120. Trying to drive 200 in that car would be crazy (heck, 120 is already a gamble)
Now based on that experience, I would go so far as to say that I'm safer in my own car at 210 than in that rented car at 120.

That said, even though most of my driving is at high speed, I've never tried doing 200 on the N1. There is a time and place for everything and 200 on the N1, during the day, is not it.
