I've always respected the blurb at the beginning of the Assassin's Creed games in this regard: it sets the correct tone before anyone can read too far into it.

I really liked the fictional religions they created for the Thief series. In fact they played a pretty large role in the story of the games.

This. IMO that really gave the story more life. Especially deadly shadows where it played the biggest role. With the whole faction system.

It's fine, as long as it enhances the story and character deveopment. Then again, if you don't like it, don't buy it.
