A widow was shot dead during her husband's funeral service and her son was wounded, said KwaZulu-Natal police on Monday.

Captain Thulani Zwane said the shooting happened at Grootgeluk near Newcastle on Sunday.

"Both victims were taken to hospital for medical attention where the woman, 53, died on arrival," said Zwane.

Her 30-year-old son was in a stable condition.
