Default Farmworkers must join unions: FAWU

Recruiting farmworkers to join unions is the only way to advance their interests, the Food and Allied Workers' Union (Fawu) said in a statement on Monday.

Speaking to farmworkers at Ramaphosa village in the Eastern Cape, Fawu general secretary Katishi Masemola said unions were vital.

They had become even more necessary since some farm owners had threatened to retrench workers, claiming they could not afford the new minimum wage.

Flawless logic. Unions and their minimum wage demands is what triggered the retrenching in the first place...

Yep, this is what these dumb unions don't understand - more expensive labour = less demand for labour. It's either keep your job and be happy with your pay , or lose your job and go live on the street. China doesn't have the minimum wage and other work - related laws, and look at the numbers - 1.3 billion people, with a 4% unemployment rate. The wages are ridiculously low, but so are the prices, so even those who work for something like 10$ a day can still afford basic stuff like clothes, food etc. Now look at SA - about 51 million people, and a 25% unemployment rate. If the minimal wage laws were not so high, then companies overseas would come and raise up factories here and actually invest in this country. Tons of people here without any proper education are fit for manual labour . With locally produced products the prices on certain products would decrease (bread, butter, jam blablabla), thus eliminating (partly) the need for increased salaries. It's all just speculation from my part, don't know how true this all is.
