please assist with ps3 to pc network

Hi,

i want to connect my ps3 with my pc, i've taken the advice of one our forumites and decided to try and install it on my own (noobie )

what do i require?

i have the network cable, i've downloaded the ps3 media server software.

Do i need a router or something (sorry if this sounds stupid i need to be sure)

so do i just plug in the cable to my ps3 and the other end to my pc and set up the network via ps3media server ???

could any of you guys show me a step by step guide perhaps ?

i'm blocked from most ps3 sites so if you could paste it here i would be gratefull,
